1917: Groundbreaking or Boring?

Goddamnit! Ok. The technology behind 1917 is exciting. It is! Really. The whole film is shot to appear as one shot. It’s not. But it looks like it. Thus the cinematographical achievement is srsly, undoubtedly fantastic! But sadly, that’s it. The story behind is pretty boring. Two soldiers set to go behind enemy lines and stop the attack of their troops that is to be an ambush and they have to manage in one day. I usually don’t give out the synopsis in reviews but there isn’t much to give out. Saving Private Ryan had similar plot but it was exciting and had a story & characters. This one doesn’t have any.

Birdman more or less relied on the technology behind cinematography as well but I gotta be honest — Lubezki’s shots were far more exciting 😃

So we’re just left with a visual marvel. No story. Sorry.

P.S. This is like those tech startups that build great technology without identifying the pain point first or realizing who they are building the product for. And then they just start shoving it in everybody’s face to try to identify the target audience.
