Bombshell by Jay Roach
In a year where Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino had features comin’ up, Bombshell was on the top of my most-anticipated list. That’s saying a lot. So did it live up to the hype?
If I hadn’t seen The Loudest Voice this year about the same story I might’ve appreciated Bombshell more. Loudest Voice was mesmerizingly good 😱. And Russel Crowe did a career-best performance portraying Roger Ailes.
Bombshell plays homage to those AdamMckay-y movies with lots of voice-overs, breaking the 3rd wall and general abstractness without diving deep enough into the premise or the characters.
I just wish these serious issues and stories were handled seriously.
My expectations for Bombshell went from extremely high (up until December) to extremely low (after reviews started comin in — mostly bad). Interestingly enough, having low expectations saved it for me. Had I gotten in with those high expectations I would’ve hated it.
Charlize Theron was amazing as Megyn Kelly. Maybe the only thing missing from The Loudest Voice was Megyn Kelly. The makeup crew did a phenomenal job. She srsly was Megyn.. like legit. To the point where it was scary. But she didn’t have any real scenes. Like half of it was explanation and talking to the viewer.
Margot Robbie — it’s not a secret that I didn’t like The Wolf of Wall Street. But I loved her in the movie. Moreover, I thought that Margot was the only good thing about TWOWS. Very few ppl get that she was acting marvelously🔥🔥🔥. Margot wasn’t just a pretty face. And I’ve been following her career closely since. Somehow she manages to star in shitty projects a lot. I have yet to see a really good film with her in it. She..herself.. is great but not the movies she plays in. Bombshell was another one of those okay films with zero character depth and mediocre screenplay where she gave it all she had. Sad.
I don’t get their nominations tbh. There weren’t enough scenes to show real acting masterclass.
The biggest issue with Bombshell is that it is a statement rather than a movie. It feels like an article or a tv program with an agenda or smth but not a movie.
P.S. The lesbian storyline was too superficial, rushed and unbelievable.
Where did all the human subtlety go in films?
Overall Bombshell is well above average and completely watchable. But again — it’s not great.
