Maleficent: Mistress of Evil by Joachim Rønning
Maleficent 2: An over-the-top sequel or Jolie goes berzerk as female, fairy Batman 👿
Ok, so despite some obvious backlash, I was a major fan for the first Maleficent. I literally saw it in the cinema by accident, didn’t plan on it and fell in love with the redefinition and exploration of this well-known villain. I said “obvious backlash” as it was extremely feministic with just one decent male character (shout-out to you Diavel, ma bro😍). It introduced a new form of “love” and how it doesn’t have to be a “romantic love” to break a curse. Love is a bond, a feeling that is formed between 2 people and doesn’t have to be romantic or sibling/relative kind of love. People can just find each other in this world and form an unbreakable, pure bond. That happens. It does. 🙌🏻
The sequel is decent enough! It digs deeper into this love between Maleficent and Aurora. They find their way back to each other and to their roots as 2 females who truly love each other (as a mother and daughter).
Girls here kick some major ass but guys aren’t that bad either. Diavel shines again. There’s the new male character who saves Maleficent & is pretty decent. Prince & King are a little naive but they are not bad. Aurora was stupid and naive too at one time or another. So this one was a little less feministic and more about the connection between 2 people and what beautiful things it can lead to. Michelle Pfeiffer’s character is poorly explored though. She couldv’e been a much cooler villain.
Maleficent, by itself, is a blockbuster but you can sense the LOVE these 2 are feeling for one another and it’s a pretty good ride.
Good!
