Beauty’s not everything, it’s the only thing. — Refn

Arthouse or Porn? It’s both. Or neither. Nicolas Winding Refn has told it about himself. That he’s a pornographer of a sort. But let’s dig deeper.

Arthouse is a genre I don’t like very much but consume in ridiculous amounts. It’s like a drug I tried once. Liked one of those pills and am trying to find a similar sensation since. Alas. But arthouse has been solely produced for the big screen..until now. Television has always been considered entertainment rather than art and art rarely got up there. But lately things are shifting in the Television business: Scorsese’s producing for Netflix, Nolan is ready to sue Netflix and all the best actors are up there trying to get into next big thing of Television. Too Old To Due Young is the first attempt of an arthouse to penetrate the TV world. And let’s talk about it.

It’s boring as any arthouse should be. It’s boring for the masses including myself as I consider myself a part of the consuming camp rather than the enjoying art-lovers camp. It’s the epitome of a auteur film — long, boring, beautiful outside & empty inside, zero script, actors acting like dolls, dragged and pointless (to me). But it’s also a fantastic achievement in cinematography and editing. There’s a sense of pornography without any memorable/actual intercourse happening during the 13 hour span. Anticipation, build-up but nothing actual.

But it’s kinda sad to see this on a laptop or TV. You should be able to see it on a big screen and by making arthouse for TV we’re taking the only thing they proud themselves about — the bigger screen enjoyment. I’m not sure where this will take the TV realm.
